One of the greatest gifts fashion has given us over the past few years is the pyjama trend. It used to be that the only time you’d wear bed clothes out of the house was for a sly trip to Tesco to get hangover supplies. Now you can do it and not only look like a proper human, but a seriously stylish one too.
So how do you cross the line from student-with-low-social-standards to nonchalant individual in a silk two-piece? A few brilliant Instagrammers have the answer:
Layer up
We’ve seen silk kimonos worn out of the bedroom before, but with a strappy vest it still has a feel of floaty Sunday afternoons at home. But when Russian designer Vika Gazinskay layers one with tailoring, you get to see it all its drapey glory without a sniff of the dressing gown about it.
Clash your fabrics
S&M connotations aside, leather is about as far from a bedtime fabric as you can find, so tuck a Grandad-worthy pyjama shirt into a leather mini-skirt or bikerish pair of trousers like blogger Camille Charriere and you’ll get a brilliantly laid-back and definitely for daytime combo.
Go wild on jewellery
A head-to-toe pyjama suit like Eleonora Carisi’s Stella McCartney one is probably the hardest to pull off IRL, but most certainly the comfiest, so it’s more than worth a stab at. The way she makes it work is actually pretty simple: just pile on the jewellery to ensure you definitely don’t look ready for bed, but instead fully-prepped for 1920s-style salon schmoozing.
Roll up, roll up
It’s not all about pyjama shirts – trousers should definitely get a look in too. The ankle roll on model Caroline Brasch’s lounge pants is just considered enough to remind you that this relaxed outfit is a deliberate style statement – ditto the clashing sweatshirt that helps the print on the trousers really stand out. A style must for hangover days.
If in doubt, wear heels
A pyjama shirt puts an expected spin on the fashion editor classic that is jeans and a silk shirt. Worn with crisp flares and heeled sandals, as per this show-goer that street-style photographer Sanda Semburg sported at Milan Fashion Week, this minimal monochrome version looks just as chic.
