It would be an understatement to suggest that fast fashion is hardly synonymous with sustainability. But there are an increasing number of brands trying to lead the charge and ameliorate fashion’s impact on the environment. One truly making positive changes is H&M, one of the first major high street destinations to put even the idea of sustainability front and centre with its Conscious collections.
Previous Conscious collections have proved to be a sell-out success, as is often the way with H&M’s exclusive ranges. And for spring 2019, it would be no surprise if the same happened again – there are dresses, statement separates and accessories that feel premium, all in a pretty colour palette of lavender, blue, coral, gold and icy white. There are sequin dresses, stand-out suits, ruffled maxis and jacquard jackets – all in a clever mix of prints and fabrics. Organic silks and recycled polyester sit alongside more innovative materials, with a pair of cowboy boots made from pineapple leaves. There’s also Orange Fiber, which is made from citrus juice by-products and creates a silk-like fabric.
Bet you never thought you’d be wearing orange peel. But this collection proves the point that sustainability can be stylish – not only that, but to shop with an awareness of where our clothes came from, what they’re made of and who made them is imperative to carving a brighter future for us all. If that future starts with affordable clothes you’ll want to wear forever, count us in.
