Hold on. Back up. Waaay back. Did Harry Styles wear a fluffy boa to the Grammy Awards last night? Yes he did, of course he did. In fact, he is apparently so into his new favourite accessory he actually wore three. Good news for us, as we are so very, very into it too. Thank you Harry, always our favourite fashion rule breaker, for giving us what we didn’t know we needed on this Monday morning.

So, then, a closer look at Harry’s trinity of super scarves (his boas weren’t feather, but rather, came in a sort of fuzzy, teddy material and were, naturally, custom Gucci). On stage, we have the spearmint one he wore with a leather suit and bare tattooed torso. This boa was ripped off and thrown into the crowd (well, would have been if there was one). Red blooded sex appeal + unpredictable looks x capital F Fun = the essence of the Styles charm.

There was also the lilac one he wore on the red carpet with a yellow plaid blazer, a sweater vestand velvet flares. This was Styles at his ’70s-inspired, eccentric-geek best. He looked thrilled, and tbf, we would be too. And finally – because why stop there? – there was also a black one donned with a tan double-breasted blazer for the virtual press room.

The Gucci looks were created in collaboration with Styles’ stylist Harry Lambert, a man who is responsible for some of the red carpet’s most exciting and least predictable looks at the moment (Lambert is also behind Emma Corrin’s wardrobe, putting her in that fabulous Miu Miu pierrot dress at the Golden Globes which, yes, we are still thinking about).

Anyway, back to Styles and his boas. We love them, we want them. And we love him too, for many reasons; his refusal to play it safe when it comes to fashion is just one of them. Styles is the consummate joyful dresser. It’s hard to believe the former One Direction star was once even in a boy band, there is absolutely nothing copy-and-paste about his look today. He hasn't got time for the typical aesthetic constraints of mainstream masculinity. His fearless approach to fashion translates to a pertinent message to his fans: just be yourself.

And let’s not forget the boas might also be the ultimate spring 2021 accessory: comfortable and cool, easy and impactful, a surefire way to add oomph to those WFHfits in the final slog. Styles might have triumphed for Best Pop Solo Performance, but the boas also deserve their own award for Best Accessory Performance. We are not worthy.
