Stepping into the Shrimps AW15 presentation this afternoon was like tumbling down the rabbit hole into a vortex of glitter and fluff. Dark, small and sparkly, the room was pumping with the energy of a young designer who has hit the big time quickly. This season, just her second time showing on the Fashion Week Schedule, Shrimps' designer Hannah Weiland had not only produced her signature faux fur coats and accessories, but a whole collection of ready to wear. 'This feels like a big moment, we’ve created planet Shrimps - it’s a whole fantasy world and I suppose it’s my fantasy, so that’s awesome,' Hannah told me.
The collection was all about journeying to the Emerald City, hence the floor to ceiling glitter, but that wasn't the only reason for the intense sparkle, on the set and on the clothes. 'I’ve always loved glitter, I always have glittery nail polish on and so I really wanted a glittery set,' she explained. 'It was a bit touch and go, health and safety said it might not be allowed, so we had to find some super textured glittery fabric that had grip for your feet,' she laughs. 'We made it happen in the end!'
If you're wondering about the clothes, think lots of seventies ginger shades, shaggy coats, forest green faux fur, shimmery silver kilts and shoes by Sophia Webster that look like they're from Star Trek, only fluff coated. Another addition this season were the embroidered little patches that Hannah had hand drawn herself, of kooky cartoon faces.
My personal favourite were the gobstopper crystal buttons blobbed onto the front of the familiar full fur coats, and one jacket that had an entirely furry hood.
Shrimps was cool from day one, but looking at today's show, despite the tonnes of cosy fur, it's only going to get cooler.
