For a long time, sequins have been wrongly cast as the tacky choice for eveningwear, but after years of misrepresentation, British designer Michael Halpern has changed all of that, promoting them to poll position when it comes to party dresses. In the past year alone he’s won the British Fashion Award for emerging talent, dressed model of the moment Adwoa Aboah at the same event where she scooped model of the year, and seen Lupita Nyong’o wearing his designs on the Star Wars red carpet.
Now, he’s collaborated on a new six-piece capsule collection with Browns, dubbed ‘After Midnight’. Inspired by late night parties, after parties and even drunken stop-offs at fast food restaurants, the new pieces offer a darker alternative to his signature kaleidoscopic designs, in a palate of navy, indigo, violet, silver and black. Expect floor-length dresses, jumpsuits, flared trousers, mini dresses and bustiers, all made from Halpern’s signature satin and sequin combo. The collection is being feted with a party at Five Guys – Halpern’s favourite fast food restaurant – during London Fashion Week this weekend.
Speaking to Vogue.com, he said: 'Specifically, it's what you'd be wearing after midnight. And it's not as colourful as my other collections. It's a little bit more mysterious, it's a little bit darker, it's as if there a bit of smoke everywhere. There's definitely a fast food element to it. I find that kind of thing really funny, and I love fast food!'
The collection is available now at brownsfashion.com and in store, and retails from £765 to £1950.
