It's true that since Daniel Lee took the role of creative director at Bottega Veneta, the brand has become the go-to for every fashion-conscious celebrity. As well as winning four major awards at last year's Fashion Awards, Lee even transformed the clutch bag from naff to must-have and is essentially for most of the trends you can now see every high street label clamouring to copy. But even Lee outdid himself with Bottega's collection for autumn/winter 2020, the hero of which was a floor-sweeping shearling coat that wasn't just a talking point among fashion editors – it appears Hailey Bieber had her eye on it, too.

The supermodel was spotted on a coffee run in New York wearing baggy jeans, a crop top, trainers, baseball cap and, of course, a face mask. So far, so low-key. What was in no way low-key, however, was the fact that Bieber was wearing Bottega's coat over the top – just a casual £6,545 worth of cosy shearling.
Despite such an eye-watering price tag, you may be interested to know that the coat – available at Farfetch or Net-a-Porter – has either sold out in some sizes or is low in stock. In fact, Farfetch has only three of Bieber's exact coat left, while Net-a-Porter's brown version is sold out completely in two sizes.

Just how did such an expensive coat become so popular? Well, Lee clearly has a knack for creating clothes that women want to wear. And this coat has the right blend of theatricality and wearability – it's a statement, sure, but it's one that's practical, too, given that it really will keep you warm. Laura Jordan, my esteemed colleague, sums up the fervour with which women covet Lee's designs. 'I guess it kind of sums up Daniel Lee's aesthetic – it's ultra-luxe but there's something deliberately 'odd' about it (you see those same cartoonish proportions in the Puddle Boots and the puffy Cassette bags). I think it defines a new kind of playful luxury, although that is a serious amount of money to drop on a coat, admittedly. It's a collector's piece.'
Of course, the pressing concern for Bieber's own yellow version is the amount of dirt that hemline will attract. Let's hope she's got a good dry cleaner.
