It’s an instantly recognisable landmark that has played host to coronations, christenings and - who could forget - William and Kate’s wedding. Now, for the first time in its thousand-year history, Westminster Abbey is set to host Gucci’s next Cruise show.
Due to take place in the Abbey’s Cloisters on 2nd June this year, the show is a major coup for the storied Italian fashion house, currently headed up by much-lauded creative director Alessandro Michele. It’s the first time that a fashion house has been granted permission to show in such venerated surroundings, so it’s no surprise that Michele told The Daily Telegraph that the news was ‘magical.’
The show will also mark the first time that the Italian house has presented a collection in London. Having lived in the capital for several years when Tom Ford was Gucci’s creative director, Michele said ‘London is always on my mind and in my memories. I’m obsessed with British culture, past and present.’
The iconic Gothic building is one of the most sacred sites in Britain, and has held royal coronations since William the Conqueror was crowned in 1066, so the decision may raise some eyebrows.
Gucci isn’t the only famous fashion house to up sticks for its cruise show. Karl Lagerfeld recently announced that Chanel would stage its next resort show in the Cuban capital, Havana, while Louis Vuitton has recently shown in Palm Springs.
