Why Glenn Close In Fatal Attraction Is Our Unexpected Style Icon

We're all about belted jackets this spring. Which is why Alexandra Forrest in 1987's Fatal Attraction is our unexpected style icon.

You may not remember her name (Alexander Forrest, fyi) but you'll certainly remember a 1987 cinematic Glenn Close's power blazers (as well as that epic bathroom murder scene.) Fatal Attraction goes down as one of our favourite 80s thrillers - and not just because Michael Douglas plays a sexually voracious man with such skills.

Go on then, why Glenn?

It goes without saying that the 80s had a lot of bad fashion. But what was right with it, was in this film. For starters, Alex subscribes to a totally monochromatic wardrobe. And her square-shouldered, collarless white blazer (worn with nothing else) an oversized white tee and a ribbed khaki belted wool coat and black leather belted jacket (very Balmain) are epic.

Who else is into it?

Everyone from Marc Jacobs to Balenciaga have opted for collarless jackets for SS14, whilst belted jackets are one of our top streetstyle tips both on (Burberry, Balmain) and off the catwalk. A belted longline leather jacket is therefore top of our wishlist - whilst cinching it in with a belt creates a brand new silhouette. Where the biker jacket is boxy, a belted longline jacket is sexy and svelte.

But how would I do it in real life?

A collarless jacket or coat, firstly. Glenn's white blazer will be dead useful for spring, in coat or jacket form - the absence of any lapels will make any blazer a bit more low-key. Secondly, belt anything. Belt everything! Or just buy a belt and cinch it over bog standard blazer if you don't want to invest in a new belted jacket.

Thirdly, let your hair roam free and pad around the house - without weapon - in a big white cotton t-shirt. Fourthly, for smarts, try a slash-to-the-navel black dress. This is not one for the cleavage. Tape 'em to the side and let the draping fall directly down the centre of your breast bone. Very Cara in her tuxedo.

So, should I do it?

Leave the perm. It's pretty hard to pull off in 2014. But the power jackets, yes. We all deserve to feel like Tamara Mellon from time to time.
