In case you've been living under a rock, Scandinavia (the region consisting of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland) is a hotbed of fashion. From Acne to By Malene Birger, Cos to Arket, it practically goes without saying their homegrown look is extremely covetable. And, yet, there is one label from Copenhagen that began life as a niche knitwear collection, which is now redefining what Scandi style means.
In a warehouse on the edge of the city, Ganni presented an autumn/winter 18 collection that shone a spotlight on the Danish capital and its all-encompassing cultural scene. The runway, which was flanked by larger-than-life photographs of the city taken by Ana Kraš, was lined with an enraptured crowd of cheering influencers and bloggers, from Susie Lau and Pernille Teisbaek to Laura Jackson and Veronika Heilbrunner. Unlike their neighbours the Swedes, the Danes love colour and eccentricity. Cowboy boots, a smattering glitter eye-shadow, a handful of ruffles and a refashioning of denim-on-denim were the lite motifs that threaded their way through the eclectic collection. For the #GanniGirls there were party dresses covered in polka dots that were played down with clashing zebra-print polo necks or matching socks tugged up the calf. Whether wide-cut or slim, trouser legs were kicked out with ankle-grazing slits. Monotone dressing was the celebrated with an all-white sporty look with a zip-up jacket tucked into track bottoms and cowboy boots, a Pepto Bismal pink boiler suit with matching heels and a fire engine red pair of dungarees layered over a coordinating blouse with billowing sleeves. The beloved Danish capital laid the ground for the boldest print featured: a photo collage by Kraš, which was tailored into a double-denim suit, a t-shirt and a flowing blouse. These are pieces you can move in, dance in and turn up bleary-eyed to brunch in.
'The FW18 collection celebrates earthly angels, those people you meet with a special aura and a particularly graceful way of moving', explains Ditte Reffstrup, Ganni's Creative Director, 'I love the film Wings of Desire and the idea that there are angels all over the city. They have something mysterious about them, something you can only sense but maybe not put into words. Right now, we need angels more than ever but you only need to look a little closer to find them.'
