These days flip flops tend to function as shower shoes, post-pedicure shoes, I've-just-hurt-my-ankle shoes. Unless you are aiming to look like Britney circa 2007 they are destined to live alongside university hoodies and Gap yah shorts and must under no circumstances go anywhere near anything 'evening'. Right?
Wrong. Flip flops have now found a friend in Dior and Louis Vuitton.
Raf Simons and Nicolas Ghesquiere are presenting flip flops as the new slider. Ugly, oh yes, but the new chic... apparently. At the Dior Cruise show in Cannes yesterday models walked at Pierre Cardin's bubble house in playful stripes and checks. So far, so Dior.
But if you looked towards their feet you'll notice several of the models wore black leather flip flops. They weren't just worn with the height-of-summer playsuits - Raf paired the flip flop with his latest twist on the tuxedo. He's basically just called on the South of France to wear their flip flops with their eveningwear.
Nicolas Ghesquiere also championed the flip flop during Louis Vuitton's cruise show in Palm Springs. Models wore black twisted leather versions with a slight platform.
So are flip flops the worst thing to happen to summer style? Or is that flipping and flopping 'sound of summer' about to return? Have your say below...
