More than skinny jeans, or even mom jeans, the hype around flares comes and goes in a flash. As the buzz fizzles out we're inevitably left with three pairs of wide-leg trousers in our cupboard that the catwalks look down on. (Said while sending side-eye Topshop’s clear plastic trousers), fashion may have moved on to a new faddish shape, but our bank balance hasn’t. To ensure we get to that cost-per-wear sweet spot we’ve uncovered four ways to wear them this season that you wouldn’t have thought of before. Arm yourself with a sweater and a critical eye and lets deep dive into fashion-forward ways to wear flares….
1. With A Fussy Blouse
This season shirts get shirty and demand attention. They’ve gone sheer, and they’ve upped their frill-factor to create a look that insists on being noticed. Add the elegant swathe of a flare’s full fabric, and you’ll have a nice counterbalance to the top-heavy trend.
2. Like A Madwoman
Invoke the power of the clash and match the eccentricity of your outfit to the width of your trouser leg. Channel Olive who wore her stripey flares with a vintage-look letterman jacket, a cut-out crop top and Converse sneakers. With her flash of blorange hair, it may be the definition of man repelling, but it’s compelling to us.
3. Like It’s 2002
…and you’re the star of Coyote Ugly. Add a bandana top, hoop earrings and heeled boots and you’ll have the Noughties nostalgia aesthetic on lock down. For a less tummy-exposed alternative, swap the handkerchief going out top for a spaghetti strap vest, and it’ll have the same effect. Trust us.
4. Colour Wash It
Laura Jackson added an oversized cream Ganni sweater to her Baum Und Pferdgarten striped flares, and instantly they felt fresh. Why? She picked one colour and ran with it. Her creamy outfit may require a stain-remover on hand at all times, but it also introduces her kicked-out hems to a whole new season of wearability. Applause.
