Coming back from the Christmas break and into the start of a new year means we often make hasty style choices without giving much thought to them. If it’s declared a trend, then we’re desperate to throw it on, anxious to be a cooler, fresher reinvention of the 2014 version of us. Which often leads to hilarious results when you look back. Check out our run down of new year fashions from January’s gone by...
January 1985: The Unitard
I mean, just wow. What were we (mostly our mothers, actually, as I wasn’t quite born yet) thinking? Sadly, these weren’t just for working out in. Some people actually rocked them underneath a power suit. Scary.
January 1992: Popper trousers
Oh, the popper pant. The brainchild of Adidas that we thought made us look so damn street. It didn’t. It kinda just looked like we couldn’t afford trousers that didn’t let in a draft, or that weren’t made from that shiny, silky weird material. (A word of warning, there’s a rumour going around that they're back in fashion this season. Uh oh!)
January 1996: Platform Trainers, A La Spice Girl
This one is pretty self explanatory: the Spice Girls had just won the Xmas number one spot with 2 Become 1, and basically established themselves as an institution of our youth, so we thought it suitable to base our entire wardrobe around them. Totes makes sense. This led to us wearing 6in-thick platformed trainers in either white, black or baby pink, depending on your affiliation.
January 2001: Baby-G Watches
Baby-G’s were a fashion phenomenon of the milennium – remember the year when we all got them for Xmas? Mine was pale blue and clear, and basically looked like I had a pastel plastic boulder stuck to my spindly sparrow wrist.
January 2007: The Mini Skirt Over Footless Tights Look
We have no idea what started it, but 2007 was the year we all wore denim mini-skirts over footless tights. Pretty much all year around, but it started in January when we wore the look with ankle boots, before moving into the ballet pump phase once it warmed up later in the year. So. Bloody. Weird.
And Finally January 2015 : A Denim Trophy Jacket
But not just your ordinary denim jacket. This year’s must be a la Burberry ss15, with cool trimmings like ostrich feathers, shearling or a bright PVC collar. Jourdan Dunn rocked the denim trophy down the catwalk, but this is a trend that actually translates to real life. We reckon we’re gonna look pretty cool, but ask us again in a couple of decades to see whether we actually did.
