Ladies dungarees

A firm favourite of Katie Holmes in Dawson's Creek, 90201's Tori Spelling and (of course) Friends' Rachel Green, dungarees are synonymous with the '90s aesthetic. But, if nineties nostalgia isn't your bag there's no need to rule out overalls just yet!

If you’re looking to switch up your go-to uniform of jeans and a T-shirt, a great pair of dungarees is the perfect solution. As practical and easy to wear as the aforementioned combo, dungarees can easily take your outfit from plain to chic in one fell swoop – plus they usually provide extra pockets, a welcome addition to any outfit in my opinion. Out on the catwalk, Celine's spring/summer 24 cropped leather dungarees have made a case for the high-fashion take.

How to wear dungarees

For the days when you’re totally stuck with what to wear, denim dungarees, a classic Breton stripe tee and stomper boots – switched out for Birkenstocks come summer – is the easiest outfit idea you can throw on in five seconds flat. If oversized and slouchy isn’t your bag, a slimmer fit that sits tighter to the body can look equally as cool – and for a ‘70s spin, consider a flared cut that’s always flattering to wear.

If the street-style set are anything to go by, wearing yours with just one strap fastened is the fashion-approved 2024 take. Note Sofia Richie’s khaki green demi done-up dungarees styled effortlessly with a beige knit and neutral accessories for the ultimate nonchalant outfit.

Generally, simplicity is key to styling dungarees. Stick to plain T-shirts, roll-necks and fine-knit sweaters instead of button-down shirts to escape bunched-up sleeves. Next, the size. If you don't have time to try IRL, opt for oversized to avoid an uncomfortable fit that's too short in the body.

Where to buy dungarees

As Grazia's Shopping Editor, a lot of my time is spent browsing stores online and creating virtual wish list. If you're on the hunt for the perfect pair of overalls, head to the high street for plenty of options with a more affordable price tag. Note H&M's neat corduroy dungarees or Next's super chic wide-leg pair. If you're looking to spend a little more, brands that specialise in denim are a great place to start like Levi's (Nudie Jeans' classic blue dungarees also have just the right amount of slouch).

Of course, shopping vintage and second hand is another great option, there's nothing quite like vintage denim as it's already been worn in for you. Try Beyond Retro, Rokit Vintage or, of course, Vinted to find a one-off pair you know will last.

Looking for maternity dungarees?

Whilst maternity jeans can often be hard to come by, those thick elastic waistbands can be tricky, a pair of dungarees can easily solve this problem. Something which Grazia’s Associate Editor, Jane McFarland can attest to. ‘I was hesitant about buying maternity clothing during my pregnancy as I didn’t want to be left with expensive clothes that I’d never wear again. I have always had my eye on a pair of dungarees so decided to scour a vintage shop and ended up finding a pair of men’s dungarees - I think there were from an old mechanic. I lived in them for the past 3-4 weeks of my pregnancy as thanks to the adjustable straps and waistband, the sizing could be changed in accordance with my expanding belly. I also wore them immediately after having my child because they were perfect for breast-feeding and when I still didn’t feel like fitting into jeans. I wore them in summer over a white T-shirt and crop-top and will wear them this winter over a chunky knit, big woolly socks and walking boots.’

So whilst dungarees designed specifically for a maternity wardrobe fit the bill, shopping in the menswear section also works well as these will often be a looser fit.

Description

If you're looking for an oversized fit, that also works for maternity-wear, try a men's pair of dungarees (ideally, Dickies classic bib style, a timeless pair that comes in sizes XS - 2XL).

Description

Available in black or cream, these relaxed-fit dungarees have easy to adjust straps - a handy design feature for maternity-wear and if you're breast feeding, too.

Description

Gap's maternity denim dungarees have an longer bib to accomodate a growing bump and come complete with darts to give extra support. A cropped leg looks great with boots, trainers and sandals, plus, it'll give a great fit if you're petite.

What age can you wear dunagrees?

Often dungarees are synonymous with a younger audience but the truth is you can wear dungarees at any age. For a grown-up casual outfit, wear slightly oversized denim dungarees with a chic cashmere crew-neck jumper. When it comes to shoes, dungarees will work with footwear you'd wear with your usual jeans, try a smart loafer in colder months or opt for your trusty Birkenstocks when summer arrives. To complete your look, a longline trench coat makes a perfect pairing to denim overalls.

Should you size up in dungarees?

Whether you're petite or tall, our advice is to go to the brands that are obsessive about proper fit and design. Some might not be cheap, but buy one that fits well and makes you feel great and you will never have to buy another pair ever again. If you're tall, size up to ensure the body is long enough for a comfortable fit. If you're petite, meanwhile, don't be afraid to neatly roll up your cuffs for a more flattering fit.

How to dress up dungarees

Whilst dungarees make an idea casual outfit, they can also be dressed up for an evening out. Try opting for an indigo or black denim pair in a wide-leg fit, paired with a simple black roll neck and a pair of silver heels. Finish everything off with your favourite red lipstick and a sizeable pair of statement earrings et viola you've transformed your dungarees from daywear to night-out ready.

Can you wear dungarees in the summer?

Yes! Dungarees make for perfect summer attire. Whether it's a loose fitting linen pair thrown over a bikini, your go-to denim pair worn with a tank top and sandals or even short dungarees, these are arguably the easiest warm-weather outfits when temperatures rise.
