The fact the Burberry show took place in a graphic-painted green house in Kensington Gardens should have been the first clue. The sound effect of birds tweeting (as the audience members frantically did a very different kind of tweeting) the second. For next Spring/Summer Christopher Bailey was inspired by British birds and bees.
What did that mean in reality? Tiers of tulle dresses inspired by dragonflies that would v much work for a posh party. Dresses and trench coats emblazoned with the graphic wording reading ‘British’ and ‘Insect’ – not subtle, but guaranteed to be seen on the red carpet soon. And a colour palette that felt earthy and natural: all maroon, dusty yellow and green – one of the big colours emerging for Spring.
Here’s what else you need to know about the show – in bite-size.
You’re Going To Start Saving (And Saving) For A Burberry Jacket
If a classic Burberry trench wasn’t already on your will-own-one-day-fashion-list, then this collection will get you saving for a piece of the British brand’s most famous export: coats. Ok, and jackets. Dark denim jackets came cropped and trimmed with shearling reminiscent of bird feathers or – brilliantly – with contrasting patent leather collars. Also worth noting down: the suede cropped jackets, which toughened up all that tulle.
Cara Didn’t Walk In The Show
But the face of their latest Burberry campaign did sit front row. Making an entrance with Kate Moss, the model snapped shots of her mate Jourdan Dunn going down the catwalk on her iPhone. And went a bit bonkers when clapping at the finale.
Oh, and she was already wearing the Burberry trainers that had just debuted on the catwalk. Talking of which…
Trainers Aren’t Going Anywhere
Continuing the flats-are-in-theme that’s already been more than apparent at Fashion Week, Burberry sent mostly trainers down the catwalk. With a sporty, coloured sole they made the elaborate tulle princess dresses look modern. (OK, there were also cork-board flat sandals but still flats, see…?)
**Something Suki Is Super Happy About **
'I was so excited not to be wearing heels, I wasn't scared at all. Just excited,' she told Grazia Daily backstage, in their #Grazia360 coverage of Fashion Week, using Google Glasses (more videos here, people).
The New Bag Every Starlet Is Going To Be Carrying Is ‘The Bee’
It looks like this.
And all the models had it monogrammed with their initials on. Note: that famous Burberry check is also back.
James Bay’s Hair Is Pretty Beautiful. And His Music Isn’t Too Shabby Either…
Burberry are notorious for nurturing new music talent – they even have an acoustic YouTube channel – so it shouldn’t have been a surprise to hear 22-year-old Brit James Bay strumming on his guitar as the catwalk show started. Who’s James Bay, you say?
Well he hails from Hertfordshire originally and has had a pretty-sharpish rise to fame since a fan uploaded a video of him performing at his local pub to YouTube and he was signed by a record label pronto. Cue performances at V Festival this summer, supporting The Rolling Stones at Hyde Park and now this Burberry gig.
The tune worth Spotifying? Clocks Go Forward.
Waists Are Back In Fashion
Need a styling tip to steal now? It’s all about the cinched in waist. Sorry, the wasp waist as Christopher Bailey christened it. Jonathan Saunders did it yesterday in his SS15 collection and at Burberry the coats, jackets and even some dresses were pulled in at the waist with bows made from tulle. Tulle that you could easily pick up from a fabric store now. Just saying.
Jamie Campbell Bower Is Still Cute…
Earlier this week he told us he cried when he first saw his model girlfriend Matilda Lowther go down the catwalk. Which might have been why he was wearing dark glasses on the Burberry front row. Because, as he told Grazia Daily, he's totally smitten with her after meeting her on the Burberry campaign. We can't do his gushing justice so watch below:
