Dolce & Gabbana Are Secret Sporty Spice Fans

If you’re familiar with Dolce & Gabbana, then you’ll know the Italian label likes to mine the heritage of their homeland for inspiration. Whether it’s Sicilian lemons, the opening verse of Lampedusa’s novel ’The Leopard’ or the architecture of a Florentine fountain, Domenico and his partner Stefano are well versed in Italy’s rich and varied offerings. So, it’s a little surprising that a key component of their latest Alta Moda collection is much more in keeping with Sporty Spice’s wardrobe than that, of say, a Principessa.

Between the sweeping ball gowns that look like they fell out of the 17th Century and the swaying headdresses fit for Rio Carnival, came a single look fit for the ‘90s. It was an oversized Arsenal-red soccer shirt teamed with a voluminous sage green maxi skirt and enough jewellery to weigh down the Titanic. Since Bella Hadid stepped out in a Juventus F.C. football jersey, some influencers have been reconsidering team shirts as a gateway to athleisure fashion.

The Spice Girls, and in particular Mel C, née Melanie Chisholm, were ‘90s fashion ringleaders. When Melanie reached peak SS fame, it was done wearing tracksuits and trainers, unlike Posh Spice who did it a little Gucci dress. So it is with little wonder that Dolce & Gabbana have circled back to Mel’s iconic sports luxe look just as the runways, again, become inflected with traditionally athletic items.
