Paris Fashion Week is over and (just when you thought that those models and editors might get a couple of days off) the next round of shows on the style calendar is kicking off somewhere else in the world.
Yes, it’s Bridal Fashion Week in New York, a time when we should expect to see hundreds of fairy tale creations coming down the runway from designers including Marchesa and Vera Wang. But one designer, Alfred Angelo, has taken the cue more literally than the rest, reinterpreting the signature silhouettes worn by Disney’s most famous princesses in his Spring 2017 collection.
These gowns are, however, not the full Magic Kingdom. Rather, they’re a slightly subtler nod to the cuts that each cartoon has made their own over the years. There’s a one-shoulder, draped chiffon dress, inspired by Pocahontas. There’s a lace-bodice with a Mandarin collar, in honour of Mulan. And then there are the big numbers – Belle’s scalloped tiers, Cinderella’s layered tulle, and a fishtail hem for Ariel.
In the same year that Coach teamed up with Mickey Mouse and Kenzo released their Jungle Book collaboration, it’s clear that fashion and fantasy have been mixing pretty well of late. But would you wear a wedding gown that’s Disney inspired?
