You’ve probably read a lot about ‘cheating on your skinny jeans’ in the past year. You’ve been boyfriend-ing and girlfriend-ing and hell, if you’re wild (and maybe a bit mad, sorry), you’ve been drop-crotching. The new denim contender? The flare. Can you believe it’s back? When skinny jeans are so flattering?
Well yes, they are. But flares can be flattering, too – promise. It’s all about adding a tunic top or a heel to elongate if you’ve got short legs. We’re not saying we’re not happy that those flared jeans with poppas that you can rip open all the way down their super flared sides are back (we are), but there are a host of low-key styles alongside the bolder.
If you’re scared, try a clean-cut indigo pair. Baby steps. If you’re open to anything, then head down to Forever 21 where you’ve got printed cotton jersey flares coming out of your eyeballs – and all for less than a tenner.

Party time!
That’s it, blow their minds with your trousers. You’ve gone for a crisp-cut, pretty blouse and court shoes and then rocked their world with your printed corduroy flares. Keep accessories in the minus stakes, with this one.
Berry Blush Print Wrap Top, £55 Topshop; New Delhi Border Flare, £98 Free People; Gallop Heels, £58 Topshop
Just cruising
This is a super-comfy, streamlined look for running around town but wanting to look funky. The stretch jersey trousers are goddesses for your lower legs (roominess suggesting twig like calves beneath), and if you’re worried about the legging-like camel toe/thigh situation, a slip dress over the top is the ideal layering tactic. Throw a denim jacket or bomber over the top when you get cold.

Wear with a statement cardigan
Do you remember when people called statement cardigans ‘coatigans’? Don’t do it ever again. But do buy this frankly amazing long-line ASOS cardigan. It’s going to work best with some muted flares and these camel ones – did you hear? Camel’s the new neutral – are just the ticket (or biscuit.) If camel isn’t for you, then this Seafarer style comes in a trillion different colourways.
Longline Cardigan in Brushed Mohair With Floral Pattern, £48 ASOS; Lasso Stripe Breton in Burgundy, £60 Petit Bateau at Urban Outfitters; Penelope Mid-Rise Flared-Leg Jeans, £195 Seafarer at Matchesfashion.com; Institute Leather Cross Over Flat Sandals, £24.99 New Look at ASOS
They’re even gonna happen for work
Box-fresh flares look ever so dapper with some brogues. Try a long-line silk shirt that you can wear half-tucked in, if you want to look a little less starched.
Silk Shirt Dress in Stripe Print, £90 ASOS White; Moto Clean-Cut Flared Jeans, £40 Topshop; Alberto Shoes, £315 Claudie Pierlot
