After months of rumours, the lead designer of Chloé has asked for her P45 and will be leaving the French fashion house at the end of March. For six years, Clare has been at the helm of this Parisian-powerhouse and consistently pushed its signature louche, hippy aesthetic to new levels.
In 1952 Gaby Aghion founded Chloé to fill the gap between couture and off-the-rack. By the time Karl Lagerfeld took over as lead designer in 1964, the label had made a nomadic party girl look its signature. So, when Stella McCartney replaced Kaiser Karl in '97 and Celine’s Phoebe Philo was drafted in five years later, the wanderlust aesthetic had gained a cult following. The label made clogs and towering platforms, boho skirts and silk camis, Broderie Anglais dresses and high-waisted jeans everyday items.
Under the watchful eye of Clare Waight Keller, Chloé was able to cast a spell on our wardrobes and the trends we wear. Through her varied collections, she reintroduced the world to motorcyclist Anne-France Dautheville – the first woman to motorbike around the world solo – kicked off Alexa Chung’s Mary Jane addiction and made high-fashion tracksuits and Gap Yah fleeces acceptable.
