Last week, Lizzo sent the internet into near-meltdown when she carried what is surely the tiniest of all tiny bags to the AMAs. The miniature Valentino bag might have been even smaller than Jacquemus' diminutive handbags, which have sold out more times than I can count. Now, the Tic Tac tote has been given the Chanel seal of approval, which means that I'm desperate to reinvent myself as a 'travelling light' sort of person.
This was Chanel's first Metiers D'Art collection designed by Virginie Viard, Karl Lagerfeld's successor, and it was, in a word, lovely. Naturally, the classic Chanel tropes were present and correct – the tweed suits, the camellias punctuating the clothes, the pearls – but they were underpinned by a strong 80s sensibility.
The set, also, was slightly more restrained than the usual spectacles we've come to expect – not that it was any less impressive. With Oscar-winning filmmaker Sofia Coppola, Viard transformed the Grand Palais into a replica of Gabrielle Chanel's apartment, including the storied mirrored staircase where Chanel reportedly positioned herself to watch her models down below. Most of the set was also rented, and will be recycled or re-used. But the real excitement came in the accessories, which provided endless inspiration for easy outfit updates, particularly applicable for the current party season in which we find ourselves.
The tiny bag was carried by Kaia Gerber, who also wore a black, velvet headband atop her head. Lest you were in any doubt, the headband is still big news and the easiest way to add pizazz to your look or distract from a bad hair day. The rest of Kaia's hair was slicked down, her look finished with a berry lip – excellent going-out inspiration (particularly if you have limited time to prepare. Simply whip on a headband, put on your lipstick and you're good to go).
There were, in fact, all manner of hair accessories, as styled by Sam McKnight. This was 'cool girl hair', he said, and some wore camellias and fishnet material to hold their ponytails in place.
As for the make-up, Lucia Pica, Chanel's Global Creative Makeup And Colour Director, gave the models twinkling eyes dusted in silver shadow, while Gigi Hadid was one of the girls sporting single, silver gems in each corner of her eyes. Others, meanwhile, sported that strong lip as seen on Kaia.
Another prevalent accessory was the chain belt, which Viard draped on countless looks, many of which made a strong case for midriff-baring, low-slung skirts. Such belts are big news for next season, so handy to get a head start right now.
