At Chanel, The Catwalk Invasion Wasn’t Actually The Most Surprising Thing That Happened

This week, you probably read about Gigi Hadid's new career as an agent of security. When the Chanel show was invaded by Marie Benoliel, a French comedian who has made a name for herself on YouTube, Hadid promptly marched her off the catwalk, all of which was recorded in a video that has now gone viral. While it was the first ready-to-wear show that Chanel has staged without Lagerfeld, who died in February this year, a lot of the details were lost in the furore caused by Benoliel's stunt. One of the major aspects of the show to be overlooked, in my humble opinion, is the fact that Virginie Viard – Lagerfeld's successor – seems to have taken inspiration from 2007's most notorious outfit.

Cast your mind back to those heady days. Social media was A Thing, sure, but certainly not in the pervasive way it is today. Self esteem wasn't inextricably linked to how many likes one received, rather how many MySpace Top 5's one appeared in. I digress. 2007 was also the height of Sienna Miller hysteria, when the poor woman could barely leave her house without the Daily Mail (and others) chasing her down the street. At this time, Miller starred in Factory Girl, a much-underrated film in this writer's opinion, and one which deserves greater acclaim.

It is possible, however, that the film was eclipsed by Miller's fame, the majority of which hinged on what she looked like and what she wore. And while it would be remiss, to say the least, to reduce a woman to her choice of clothing, it would be a crying shame not to congratulate Miller for inventing a frankly absurd outfit that has appeared on the Chanel catwalk, no less, over a decade later.

Attending the Factory Girl premiere, Miller wore a pair of black 'hot pants' (they were large black knickers, let's be honest) with opaque black tights and a cropped black, fluffy jumper. At this point, it's worth noting that this premiere was also lucky enough to enjoy the presence of Anna WIntour. Imagine meeting Anna Wintour when you're essentially half-dressed. Miller did it. And it was excellent.

In this Instagram age we're currently enjoying – or enduring depending on who you speak to – there is much talk of 'influencers'. But really, how can we ever take them seriously again when the OG is clearly Sienna Miller in a pair of massive black pants and tights? Gigi Hadid appeared in the exact same combo to walk across the Parisian rooftops, constructed in the Grand Palais as Chanel's latest catwalk. And in those black pants and tights, she even saw off an intruder.

The only conclusion to make, here, is that 2007 is the new black. So, see you next spring, when we all come out of hibernation wearing footless tights with kitten heels, our hair cut into an homage to the POB and our black tights firmly held in place with our huge black knickers. Thank you, Sienna.
