The CFDA Awards (that's the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards, FYI) are the Oscars of the fashion world, recognising design excellence in womenswear, menswear and accessories, as well as major achievements in other related fields.
Naturally, it's an event to which designers and celebrities bring their fashion A-game, and this year's red carpet didn't disappoint, with killer looks from the likes of Naomi Campbell in Brandon Maxwell (who was honoured with the Swarovski Award for Womenswear on the night), Alexa Chung in custom Prabal Gurung and the Olsen sisters wearing all-black-everything. The prestigious Fashion Icon gong was awarded to Beyoncé, who opted out of the red carpet but stole the show when she was joined on stage by her daughter Blue Ivy and her mother Tina Knowles.
In an emotional acceptance speech, the singer dedicated the award to her mother, explaining how she had worked tirelessly to create costumes for her daughter from the very beginning.
'Starting out in Destiny’s Child, high-end labels didn’t really want to dress four black country curvy girls, and we couldn’t afford designer dresses and couture. My mother was rejected from every showroom in New York,' she said. 'But like my grandmother, she used her talent and her creativity to give her children their dreams.' When life gives you lemons...
She then explained how 'My mother actually designed my wedding dress, my prom dress, my first CFDA Award dress, my first Grammy dress, and the list goes on and on.'
'My mother and my uncle, God rest his soul, made all of our first costumes, individually sewing hundreds of crystals and pearls, putting so much passion and love into every small detail.'
