As this is the year Trump took office and the wheels of Brexit started turning you would think it would be hard to surprise us. But, hey, we’re putting our hands in the air and saying ‘we’re wrong’ for we are totally flabbergasted to see just how many designers are predicting bum bags to be the IT accessory of next season. Following in the footsteps of dad caps and velour trackies, this polarising trend is infiltrating the market. Once a fashion joke, the humble zip-up bag got a designer makeover courtesy of Gucci, Supreme and Balenciaga.
In a certain enclave of East London a handful of overtly hip Instagrammer’s have been wearing this burgeoning trend for a while now. But, it just never seemed like something that would catch on. For goodness' sake, the name alone (fanny pack or bum bag, you take your pick) is totally ludicrous. It’s explicit without being raunchy, it sounds like something you would be embarrassed to say aloud. However, that won’t stop this trend spreading like wildfire.
The new way to wear this bag is swung cross body and under the arm. But, if (like me) bossoms get in the way of this looking slick then it’s now acceptable to strap it up tight at the waist. This option has the advantage of creating an hourglass silhouette. However, there is the other possibility of wearing it like tourists have done for yonks i.e. low-slung and at the waist. Scroll for a little inspiration…
1. Who You Calling A Fanny Pack?
Sure, Vashtie’s low-slung Prada bag ain’t cheap, but who said looking this good was affordable?
2. Suits You
Louche tailoring is only improved by a discordant accessory, like a leather bum bag.
3. That Fussy Feeling
This many colours and textures are sure to bring a smile to your face.
4. Chain Reaction
Add a bike belt to anything and you get instant sass.
5. The Malboro Woman
A cheeky dash of 90s nostalgia courtesy of a thrifted piece can be the making of an outfit.
