The first Monday in May sees the fash pack swarm into New York for the Met Gala, celebrating the perfect fusion of art, music and fashion. But the first Monday in December is all about the British Fashion Awards. So big is the event becoming now, the ceremony this year has been rebranded as simply ‘The Fashion Awards’.
And there’s a few surprises for the fashion land's version of the Oscars, elected by 1,500 leading figures in the industry, from 41 different countries (wowza!)…
Supermodel sisters and Instagram darlings, Bella and Gigi Hadid, will both be battling it out for the prestigious International Model of the Year category (along with their long-time pal, Kendall Jenner).
Get ready for new award categories this year, too. For extra cool factor there’s the best ‘International Urban Luxury Brand’ - with nominees including the new label on everyones lips this Fashion Week, Vetements, up against Adidas and cult brand, Palace. Alongside awards for the best ‘International Business Leader’ and ‘International Accessories Designer’. Although no surprises for the best 'British Womenswear Designer' - with J.W. Anderson (whose also scored a 'Best Menswear Designer' nom) and Christopher Kane up for gongs last year.
The winners will be announced at a fundraiser gala benefitting the British Fashion Council Education Foundation on December 5 at the Royal Albert Hall in London in front of 4,000 guests.
‘Huge congratulations to all the Fashion Awards 2016 nominees! It’s an incredible achievement and a very well-deserved recognition for their achievements this year,’ says Dame Natalie Massenet, Chairman of the British Fashion Council.‘The shortlisted nominees prove the incredible talent we are so fortunate to work with both at home and abroad. This year’s ceremony will be thrilling and I look forward to welcoming all our guests to London and to what has become one of the most-anticipated highlights of the global fashion calendar.’
