Billie Eilish’s Grammys Outfit Was A Tour De Force In Personal Style

Billie Eilish might have left empty-handed after last night's Grammy Awards, but her outfit was a typically directional take on red carpet dressing that, in this writer's eyes at least, blew her competition out of the water.

Although she was nominated for an impressive seven awards, including heavyweight categories Song of the Year, Album of the Year, and Record of the Year, Eilish didn't win any gongs (the same was true of Taylor Swift, whose thigh necklace scored headlines post-Grammys).

Eilish's outfit, however, was a fashion-editor favourite (Sabrina Carpenter, in ice blue JW Anderson, was a close second and ditto Blue Ivy). Side-stepping an obvious kind of glamour, Eilish turned to Prada, wearing black-and-white separates to put a fresh spin on tailoring. Crowning the look with the brand's sailor's cap, micro sunglasses and a chunky silver chain that decorated the waistband of her trousers, it certainly turned heads on the internet.

'She looks like she runs a poetry workshop at the library,' said one user on Instagram. 'This is actually giving a ‘90s red carpet vibe. I’m here for it,' said another, referring to an era when a premiere or indeed an awards ceremony didn't automatically mean gowns. Instead, A-listers wore things like jeans and even carried handbags (imagine!), showing off their personal style with a more relaxed approach to step-and-repeat dressing that you rarely see today.

Eilish changed to perform Birds of a Feather, appearing on stage with her brother, Finneas, in another lo-fi outfit of baggy jeans and a baseball cap (Dodgers, obviously), this time courtesy of Martine Rose. Taylor Swift was caught on camera dancing along, looking rather like the famous emoji in her fire red Vivienne Westwood, beside friend Margaret Qualley, who was similarly moved to, well, move.

Despite being born in 2001, Eilish is distinctly '90s, not so much in aesthetic but in the way she always prioritises her personal style in preference to outfits that break the internet. Long may it continue.
