Yesterday, the Hungarian actress and socialite Zsa Zsa Gabor died at 99, leaving behind her a life lived to the fullest which included nine marriages, a history of spectacularly witty one-liners and well, a wardrobe of incredible proportions.
Born in 1917, Zsa Zsa emigrated from Hungary (where she had been crowned Miss Hungary) in the Second World War and became an actress appearing in Moulin Rouge and Lovely to Look At. She is remembered for having nine marriages yes (including one to Conrad Hilton) but that's not to detract from her as a woman - Zsa owned those marriages and kicked them to the kerb when she was done. Just check what she said about Conrad Hilton.
'Conrad's decision to change my name from Zsa Zsa to Georgia symbolized everything my marriage to him would eventually become. My Hungarian roots were to be ripped out and my background ignored. ... I soon discovered that my marriage to Conrad meant the end of my freedom. My own needs were completely ignored: I belonged to Conrad.'
Turns out Zsa Zsa was a wealth of wisdom when it came to men - here's some of her best quotes.
'I am a marvelous housekeeper. Every time I leave a man, I keep his house.'
'My husband said it was him or the cat. I miss him sometimes.'
'How many husbands have I had? You mean apart from my own? '
'There's no better money to spend than your own.'
'The only place men want depth in a woman is in her decolletage.'
'To a smart girl men are no problem - they're the answer.'
'I pay all my own bills... I want to choose the man. I do not permit men to choose me.'
'I believe in large families: every woman should have at least three husbands.'
'I never hated a man enough to give him his diamonds back.'
'Diamonds are a girl's best friend and dogs are a man's best friend. Now you know which sex has more sense.'
'I don’t remember anybody’s name. Why do you think the ‘dahling’ thing started?'
'I want a man who's kind and understanding. Is that too much to ask of a millionaire?'
'I always said marriage should be a fifty-fifty proposition. He should be at least fifty years old, and have at least fifty-million dollars.'
