While celebrities have embraced vintage in a big way of late, there's one fashion house in particular whose archives have been ransacked like no other: Jean Paul Gaultier. Kim Kardashian has worn several pieces over the past few years, as has her sister Kendall, who was spotted in a vintage JPG co-ord just last week. Bella Hadid, too, has worn many of the designer's old creations, most notably choosing a gown from the spring/summer 2002 collection for an appearance at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.
No wonder, then, that Jean Paul Gaultier has decided to open its archives to us all, offering selected vintage pieces to buy and rent. While the pieces for sale include the very wearable tartan jackets, logo dresses and various accessories, the rental offering consists of some of the label's most recongisable creations, including Madonna's infamous cone bra.
Antoine Gagey, Gaultier’s managing director, toldWomen's Wear Daily: 'The idea is to renew, to surprise the customer and to give them the opportunity to wear different pieces of Jean Paul Gaultier that they will not be able to buy simply because they don’t exist.'
Jean Paul Gaultier retired from his eponymous label last January, declaring 'fashion must change. There are too many clothes . . . that serve no purpose.' At the same time, he announced a new direction for the Haute Couture collections, which now involve collaborations with a different designer each season. The first was Sacai’s Chitose Abe, who created the autumn/winter 2021 couture collection.
The younger generations, possibly inspired by the likes of Jenner and Hadid, are largely responsible for this uptake in sales of vintage pieces. As a result, Jean Paul Gaultier wants to become the main supplier of its archive collections, rather than relying on other rental or resale platforms.
Considering that prices for this new (old) collection start at around £150, they are likely to be snapped up incredibly quickly. You have been warned.
