If you ever needed proof to the extent of our obsession with all things ‘French girl’ chic, look no further than the off-the-shoulder cardigan with a 30,000-person waiting list from Sezane.

The £90 ‘Barry’ cardigan isn’t a one-off, special edition piece, but rather the most popular knitwear in the brand’s permanent collection, which is restocked regularly. Since it was launched in September it has sold out multiple times.

So, what’s the secret to its charm? With its slightly off-the-shoulder cut and v-neck design, it’s nailing that whole ‘just rolled out of bed’ look – so far, so ‘French girl’. The relaxed cardy, which comes in ecru, light grey, nude or black, can also be worn frontwards or backwards depending on how you style it, making it a versatile piece, too. As it explains in the description on the Sezane website: ‘you can never get bored of your Barry jumper.’

It’s also been worn by numerous influencers including Pretty Little Fawn and Sincerely Jules, which of course adds to its appeal. The brand’s ‘Cassie’ jumper, which laces up at the back with ribbon, was previously an Instagram hit.

Launched in 2013, Sezane was the first French brand exclusively available online and is part of a new wave of designers exporting that cool-girl myth supposedly embodied by our European neighbours. Alongside Rouje, the label set up by Jeanne Damas, as well as heritage brand Carel and footwear Jonak, it’s fast-becoming one of the best-loved brands for Francophiles both in the UK and US.

In fact, Brits can even buy into the Sezane magic in real life at the moment, with its first Christmas pop-up shop now open on South Molton Street in London. Allons-y!
