It all started back in autumn/winter ’13. Cast your minds back to when Céline introduced the cult accessory of the season, the plaid shopper. Within minutes, the fashion crowd recognised the familiar print and called the French fashion house out for taking inspiration from the everyday laundry bag. Yes, seriously.

The hefty tote we used to bag for a mere couple of pounds, was now being sold for over £1,000. Who knew our grandmother was so on trend?

Then take Vetement’s ‘It’ tee of the season. Only the French powerhouse could influence the fashion crowd to invest £185 into a t-shirt emblazoned with the ‘DHL’ logo.

And now, Balenciaga has challenged its rivals by seeking inspiration from one of our most cherished stores. Yes, the unmistakably blue 40p carrier from Ikea played muse for the brand’s latest drop.

Balenciaga has introduced the Arena Extra-Large Shopper Tote, a new accessory which boasts a similar handle and same striking hue as the Swedish homeware giant's carrier. The only difference? The designer equivalent will set you back £1,705.

But they say imitation is the greatest form of flattery and Ikea’s sales leader Stella Monteiro admitted to Today: “We are extremely flattered to seemingly be an inspiration for the latest catwalk designs for Balenciaga."

He continued: "Our Ikea Frakta tote is one of our most iconic products which are already owned and loved by millions - now many people truly can get the designer look for less.”

Balenciaga has yet to comment.
