Ashley Williams occupies a verified sphere as a young designer who actually sells. Her collections have cult followers (looking at you, Debrief Deputy Editor Vicky Spratt). But, beyond the hype and legions of fans, Ashley’s work pushes forward burgeoning trends by looking deeper into the zeitgeist. For today’s presentation at London Fashion Week, Williams captured that stoned sensation at the heady meeting point of paradise and paranoia.
The image of a teeth-baring dog and slogans twinned these two distant emotions together. Tops writ large with the word ‘Misery’ were likely a reference to the Stephen King novel of the same name, dresses were tagged with the topical, political-infused phase: ‘Save the planet’, while diamante-encrusted hair slides glittered with the word ‘paradise’.
In the show notes, Bertie Brandes describes the look as, ‘clothes to sneak out of parties in’. Here she refers to the full tracksuits, cowboy hats, which we imagine was nicked during late night rabble rousing, Hawaiian print cargo pants, cropped puffer jackets and tartan kilts.
As an instant Ashley Williams fix, follow her stylist Julia Sarr-Jamois’ advice and tuck your sweatshirt into your track pants. Once sacrilege, this is now the ‘in’ way to wear athleisure. So, get tucking. Here are the top six things we want, need and love from Ashley’s new collection:
Cowboy hats over hoodies
Diamante slogan hair slides
Short, grungey bangs
Moody grey eyes using Mac’s Kabuki range
Next level finger waves courtesy of BLEACH’s Alex Brownsell
That Hawaiian Print
Those Slogan Tops
