Ariana Grande had her very own Cinderella moment at Sunday’s Grammy Awards. The first, of course, was at the Met Gala 2019, where Zendaya’s stylist Law Roach served as fairy godmother, lighting up the skirt of her Zac Posen gown. Last night Ariana turned to layers of tulle instead of LEDs, wearing a tiered wedding cake of a dress that was custom-made by Giambattista Valli.

The result was the night’s most iconic step-and-repeat shot, with Ariana surely creating what is set to be the red carpet pose to copy. It was somewhere between a squat and swoon, with the singer looking like she was about to settle into her bed of ice blue tulle for some pre-ceremony shut-eye. Bless.

Giambattista Valli, the king of the princess dress, was always going to be a canny move for the singer’s return to the Grammys stage. In terms of theatre, you can’t top it. The Instagram post of J.Lo filling the entire seating area of a limousine with fluorescent pink layers of Giambattista Valli tulle got more than 2 million likes, after all.

Ariana, who lost out to the night’s biggest winner Billie Eilish, also joined a growing movement among the red carpet community to bring back gloves. Hers, which finished just above her elbow in true Cinderella style, are the latest in a series of glove-related triumphs that include Zoe Kravitz at last week’s SAG Awards and Rihanna at the British Fashion Awards in December.

She later changed into a slightly more ‘casual’ two-piece, comprising of a satin halterneck and another puffball skirt. The gloves stayed put, however, which leads us to hope that she didn’t lose a slipper at the after parties.
