Why Annie Hall Is Our Nostalgic Style Crush Right Now

When I told the rest of The Debrief office that this week's nostalgic style crush was Annie Hall, their reaction was a little bit like this:

Firm fans of* Annie Hall*, they are. In fact, who isn't? Diane Keaton's turn as Annie in Woody Allen's 1977 movie – supposedly an autobiography of Diane and Woody's relationship – was pretty much the ditziest, loopiest, nerviest character we've ever encountered. But her style? Faultless. So here's your #NTK on Annie's style.

Go on then, why Annie?

Er, well I sort of just said. But to recap, we love what she's got going on: turtlenecks, vintage men's tuxes, fedora hats, brogues and just a generally _super-c_omfortable Katherine Hepburn-esque take on androgyny.

Who else is into it?

Keaton's rumpled menswear is very a la mode right now. Chloe and Acne have both produced some delectable cream pinstriped wide-leg trousers for SS14. And just check out Cara Delevingne and Angelina Jolie's recent slew of tuxes on the red carpet. Palazzo pants are officially spanking skinny trousers' butt in terms of emerging trouser trends. Even ties look set to make a comeback, if the current neckwear trajectory is anything to go by. And who does any of that better than Annie?

But how would I do that in real life?

It's surprisingly easy. Firstly, you will have to invest in some wide-leg trousers. Or, failing that, some pinstripe ones. But we think it's highly likely you'll already have a poloneck in your wardrobe – at last count I had, er, 11 – and while the fedora and tie are optional (the tie in particular is a polarising accessory) you're also bound to have if not some brogues, then some plimsolls or loafers. Which will give the same effect. If you don't have any we'd recommend investing (I mean even Vicky Bdoes loafers these days) as you can also wear even on days when you're not praying at the altar of Annie. (They look lovely with a pleated skirt as well as trousers.)

So should I do it?

Well, look how comfortable Annie is. Do you think she'd have a problem running for the bus? Would she have to inch down carefully when picking something up off the floor? Or what about looking overdone, would she struggle with that? No, no and no. So in short, our reply to you is: yes, yes, YES!
