The designer whose bejewelled swan minaudiere made Carrie Bradshaw say "I love you" to Mr Big on Sex and the City is entering into a dynamic new collaboration.

Leiber is teaming up with cool kid of the fashion industry, Alexander Wang, to bring a limited edition jewel-encrusted minaudiere to the runway this autumn.

Leiber's charismatic clutches found worldwide fame on the HBO show in the 1990s.

They first appeared in an early episode of SATC, where Big gave Carrie a glitzy bird-shaped clutch.

Ironically, Carrie didn't love the "just wrong" creation - so much so, that she ended up compensating by declaring her love for Big.

Leiber's work also made an appearance in the 2008 SATC movie, where - fans may recall - Charlotte's cute daughter tucks Carrie's mobile phone away in a cupcake-shaped bag that was custom-made for the film:

California-born Wang is joining forces with Leiber to debut a bag shaped like a roll of $100 bills for his spring show during New York Fashion Week on 9 September.

The statement bag is hand-beaded from 10,263 green, clear, black and gunmetal Swarovski crystals.

It takes around a week to make each one and the price $4,995 (£3,867) is a reflection of this pain-staking work. The accessory will appear in a very limited line of just 20 editions.

As WWD - who announced the news - point out, this is not the most natural collaboration for the two fashion powerhouses.

Wang is revered for his sleek and contemporary aesthetic, which draws from low-key street style influences paired with immaculate tailoring.

Leiber, meanwhile, has built a cult following around her elaborate, high-octane evening bags accentuated by outlandish, kitsch design detail.

However, with Leiber's brand keen to develop resonance with a younger, edgier audience and Wang itching to move out of his comfort zone, this could be a match made in heaven.

"When I think about collaborations, I always try to work with people who do something that’s very specialised and who are a leader in their field," Wang tells WWD. "I love that we don’t normally do evening bags or do anything that’s really decorative or bedazzled.

"Within the last year and a half, we’ve been pushing a lot more evening capsules in our pre-collections. One of the gowns that we’ve done for three seasons now has been consistently one of the top sellers in our entire line, so we know there’s a customer for it."

The designer promises fans "something completely different" for his upcoming New York show.
