It wasn’t only the hundreds of Alexander McQueen creations which make up the new ‘Savage Beauty’ exhibition which were on show at the V&A last night. The decadent gala dinner- held to celebrate the show’s return to London after a sell-out run in New York in 2011- was attended by a huge gathering of McQueen’s friends and collaborators. Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell rubbed shoulders with 2015 cool girls from Cressida Bonas to FKA Twigs. She performed a set wearing a multi-coloured bird of paradise creation from Alexander McQueen Spring Summer 2008, the collection McQueen designed in tribute to his friend Isabella Blow.
Numerous celebrities arrived bedecked in highlights from Lee McQueen’s own repertoire. His best friend Annabelle Neilson wore an exquisite gown crafted from tiny black and white feathers, also from Spring Summer 2008. Naomi Campbell also opted for plumes, this time in the form of a darkly romantic mid-length backless dress from Spring Summer 2007. Meanwhile, Aimee Mullins, the model and athlete, who starred in McQueen’s Spring Summer 1999 show, came with her fiancé Homeland actor Rupert friend and wore a high-necked emerald velvet dress with amber bead embroidery.
There was also plenty of representation for the designs of Sarah Burton, who took over as Creative Director following Lee McQueen’s untimely death in 2010. Erin O’Connor, who recently made a catwalk comeback at Marc Jacobs’ Autumn Winter 2015 show, arrived in a stunningly simple cream column dress from the Pre-Spring Summer 2013 collection. Kate Moss chose a see-through black lace creation from pre-Autumn Winter 2015 while Jamie Hince wore a modern take on the tuxedo with a loosely knotted black tie from Spring Summer 2015. Stella Tennant and Naomie Harris both opted for kimono dresses from the Japan-inspired Spring Summer 2015 collection.
Alexander McQueen wasn’t the only name worn by attendees. Victoria Beckham paid tribute to McQueen’s avant-garde influence with a cut-out black gown from her recent Autumn Winter 2015 collection while Cressida Bonas chose an empire-line dress by Mulberry.
