Following a storming debut season, Alexa Chung continues to forge on with her trajectory as a fashion designer. The style icon unveiled a second season of her AG collaboration exclusively to editors this week via a model identity parade – complete with a height measurement backdrop that she duly posed against in the one outfit you were allowed to Instagram (a polka dot pussy bow blouse and demure suede skirt).
Her chicks were part of a bad-ass girl gang – and for next season they’ll be decked out in more than just denim. Alexa’s autumn/winter collection has more of a ready-to-wear focus than the first, so you’ll find suede skirts and capes, pussy bow blouses and sweatshirts alongside her now honed-to-perfection jeans. All pieces – aside from the polka-dot blouse and suede pencil skirt Alexa wore during the presentation – are strictly embargoed.
So whilst we can’t reveal the full looks, we can share the following factoids…
1. She may be one of the most fervently followed fashion girls on the planet, but talking about clothes? Not Alexa’s favourite pastime.
‘I don’t know really what to talk about with clothes. I’m alright designing and wearing them, but when I have to talk about them I feel like I’m in an art class, kind of like well “this represents sadness…”, so I’m just going to give you the names of them.’
2. Alexa’s imaginary muse for the season is called Loretta.
‘I imagined she was riding on the back of a motorbike. This is what she was wearing – like a seventies jacket we found. We did a lot of vintage shopping in LA.’
3. Her ‘dream denim situation’ involves only two per cent elastane stretch.
So the updated Revolution style has more of ‘a masculine touch and wears in well.’
4. Even when she was a fit model she had something to say about fashion design.
As her models were changing she told us: ‘I actually used to do this for French Connection…I kept wanting to be like“don’t do black, do it in red”, and they’d be like “you’re fired”.’
5. Following last season’s popular motif sweatshirts, Alexa has chosen a different message…
in English this time as apparently her English-to-French translation skills weren’t as good as hoped. Doh. Introducing the slogo: Sacred Monsters. ‘So this is from a Richard Hell book I was reading… about lead singers, which I love, I’ve given them up though so it’s fine, being sacred monsters because they’re put on this pedestal. I really love that phrase.’
6. Many of the pieces in the first collection were named after her girl friends, this season one piece is inspired by her mum.
‘For the introduction of knits, I really love this idea of a twin-set, with a bit of a twist... This is actually inspired by Jill Chung my mother,’ she said of a shrunken crew neck.
** 7. Alexa herself may not have been in a girl gang, but she did reveal the details of her first girl band.**
‘We didn’t do anything rebellious. Unless you count staying after school with maracas. We were called Sirens, and were this really embarrassing All Saints rip-off band.’
8. That Coachella's crazy fashion fest prompted a wardrobe intervention... a
fter a barrage of flower crowns she decided that on the second day she'd probably go in a suit. It didn't happen. But wouldn't it have made for a welcome change?
