Alber Elbaz – former creative director of Lanvin, from 2001 to October 2015 – has collaborated with iconic footwear brand Converse All Star to commemorate its 100th anniversary.

According to Hypebeast, Elbaz and Converse’s “Avant” collection will feature seven iterations of the timeless All Star, reinvented and refreshed with outlandish prints and colours – designs that are considerably removed from the simple, clean-cut black and white colourways so synonymous with the 1917-born shoe.

‘[T]he new “Avant” line is designed to catch onlookers’ gazes and demand a spot in every enthusiasts’ closet and wardrobe,’ and is due to land on the market on September 25.

The new "Avant" collection

While the Elbaz x Converse centenary anniversary collection will be a blessing for some, it is undoubtedly a marmite shoe collection, one that has certainly divided the Grazia office. Is this the new ‘ugly shoe’? If so, are we on-board?

The designer of the ultimate ‘ugly shoe’ Christopher Kane recently reworked his original Croc design to create four new styles that are more outrageous than before (unless embellished, ostrich feather, tiger-print crocs are your thing, of course), so it’s clear gaudy shoes are not going to disappear off our footwear radar anytime soon.
