Just in time for Fashion Revolution week, Adidas has revealed its brand new running shoes, which are not your average trainers. Called the Futurecraft.Loop, the shoes are designed to enhance performance – and potentially save the planet.
100 per cent recyclable, the shoes are the product of a partnership between Adidas and Parley for the Oceans, an organisation that works to fight all the current threats to the world's oceans – namely, plastic. As a result, Adidas has said that this year, it will produce 11 million pairs of shoes made from recycled plastic collected by Parley from beaches, remote islands and coastal communities.
Eric Liedtke, executive board member at Adidas said: “Taking plastic waste out of the system is the first step, but we can’t stop there. What happens to your shoes after you’ve worn them out? You throw them away – except there is no away. There are only landfills and incinerators and ultimately an atmosphere choked with excess carbon, or oceans filled with plastic waste. The next step is to end the concept of “waste” entirely. Our dream is that you can keep wearing the same shoes over and over again.”
The idea is that when your shoes are nearing the end of their life, you return them to Adidas, where they will be "washed, ground to pellets and melted into material for components for a new pair of shoes, with zero waste and nothing thrown away."
The brand is releasing the shoes to 200 "leading Creators from across the world’s major cities", who will provide feedback on the shoes before they're released to the wider public in 2021.
Could this be the future of sportswear, and the garment industry in general? It certainly feels like a step in the right direction.
