Rihanna and Adam Selman are in a chicken and egg situation. It’s hard to tell if RiRi wears what Selman designs, or whether Selman designs for specifically for her. Whichever comes first, who really cares, because ever since Selman - the boyfriend of Rihanna’s stylist Mel Ottenberg - dressed his muse in* that* naked 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards dress we’ve needed to see Rihanna in more Selman.
At his spring summer 18 show, which was presented at New York Fashion Week last night, Selman doubled down on what he does best, he made clothing Rihanna will love. Between the marabou feathers, denim and diamante it touched on many iconic styles the star has already worn.
The collection was a pick'n'mix of Americana. He showed knockout Hollywood-ready red-carpet gowns followed by double denim suits. Sandwiched between the embroidered denim that looked like it fell out of Nudie Cohn’s country and western playbook, there were feather boob tubes, gingham co-ords and flowing silken suits and dresses. By and large, separates ruled the roost, with straight leg trousers reigning over any other shape and flowing drape jackets making a comeback. As ever, Selman kept the make-up and hair relatively relaxed to let the clothes shine on their own.
Building on the cult popularity of Selman's last collaboration with sunglass makers Le Specs, the designer debuted a new, instantly (and Insta-) appealing pair of shades in the collection. His SS18 twist on the cat-eye style comes with sassy nicknames, like The Last Lolita and The Fugitive.
Selman's SS18 look is fun, optimistic and catching. 'People are running from America like it’s a bad word,' Adam Selman told Vogue backstage before the show. 'So I wanted to run toward it, embrace it even more.'
