Summer trends move at a much gentler pace than that of the winter; in that things you have bought the year before will quite possibly be applicable the summer thereafter. Let's be honest, it would be pleasant if fashion operated as such the whole year - but it doesn't and we are but willing victims of its cyclical hurricanes.

But when photographer Jessie Bush, of Vogue Australia and blog We The People Style touched down in Indio, California on our behalf - I know, you've heard enough about The 'Ella and we swear that this is the last time - she found trends going strong that we were embracing last summer - but that have been ramped up, with a twist. Here's your need to know.

A black sundress

Black slip dresses are totally having a summer moment. Kinda grungy, kinda Virgin Suicides meets the dark arts. Hands down better than a crocheted pink flowery number, is what we say. Try this baby beaut from The Reformation or this lace one from Boohoo which is mega cheap and has pleasing lingerie vibes.

A pleated skirt, pared back

We are enjoying seeing the ladylike pleated skirt out of it's 'high tea' environs - why aren't more people wearing pleated skirts at festivals? This clean-line take on the 90s (we could call it normcore, but we won't) translates into some pretty pared-back festival dressing, given the fashion frenzy that is Coachella. We'd like to take the pleated skirt one step further away from it's genteel origins, with this Y-3 number. The three stripes give it a sporty twist, making it the un-girliest pleated skirt we've seen in a while. For your feet, Topshop has some great narrow fit pool slides.

Some mirrored shades

If you can can distract your eyes away from blogger Leandra Medine's crisp take on the co-ord (and her Isabel Marant Carol sandals) check out her orange mirrored shades. Nice kink to offset a cute look. Coconut helps, too. We love these Illesteva ones, or for a cheaper fix try these, by Minkpink.

A bit of broderie anglaise

There's no denying the effect that Isabel Marant has had on our summer wardrobe; anyone else live and die by the broderie anglaise sword? There was tons of it at Coachella; bloggers Danielle Bernstein and Natascha Elisa (pictured) showcased white broderie anglaise rompers, which seem to be the ideal replacement for our LWD. Try this Carven crop top with broderie trim, which is ideal for anyone not on board with the onesie.

And perhaps a vintage tee

Actress Shenae Grimes may be LA born and bred, but her aesthetic is distinctly Camden Lock. Think lace-up black boots and vintage rock tees, like her model husband Josh Beech. There were a lot of vintage tees at Coachella - perhaps not all worn in the most authentic fangirl guise, but dare we say we're also really into them? They make denim look so much cooler. Beyond Retro always have a good selection of vintage band tees and random Americana merchandise.
