Being “in fashion” is surprisingly hard work. Trends come and go (we’re looking at you, mom jeans) but if there’s one thing that never goes out of style, it’s the iconic Breton top. Just as well, really, as at last count we’ve got about 12 of them.
Pioneered by Coco Chanel back in 1917, these days the sailor-inspired style is essentially the fashion equivalent of a Friends rerun – comfy, familiar and always there for you, obviously – but what about when your staple stripes start to feel a little, well, sad?
Don’t spring clean your wardrobe just yet. We’ve joined forces with Tu and scoured the streets to find 5 of the best updates. Get a dose of inspo below, then shop the purse-friendly pieces you need to bring your Breton into SS16. Monday to Friday? Sorted.
Tie it up
The bandana is officially back. A far cry from the ‘90s music video incarnation (thankfully), this season the style set are using the classic paisley style to add dimension to their daywear. We like ours colourful, and knotted around the neck for maximum sass.
Scarf, £4
Trust the trench
If there’s one wardrobe classic to rival the Breton, it’s the trusty trench. Layering the two equals instant polish, and adding a white trainer keeps the whole thing 2016. Want extra style points? Just add sunnies.
Brace yourself
You can barely move (or, er, scroll) on Instagram for snaps of cool girls in dungarees, and it’s easy to see why. Whether flared, skinny or skirted, there’s a pair to suit just about every shape and occasion. Layer over stripes for 'likes' guaranteed.
Fly high (waisted)
This isn’t the first time we’ve waxed lyrical about the magical properties of the high-waisted wide leg trew, and it won’t be the last. Give black a spring break (in a non teen movie way) and try fresh white like this lady. Promise you won’t regret it.
Double up
What’s better than stripes on top? Stripes on top AND bottom, natch. No need to buy a new dress, either – a bold skirt plus your fave tee is all you need to nail the look. Hat optional, but we’re voting yes.
