Back in the ‘90s, Xtina and Britney Spears were often compared to one another. But, other than being blonde American singers they had zilch in common. Brits was the butter-wouldn’t-melt-in-her-mouth virginal girl-next-door, while Christina Aguilera was the octave-smashing bad girl who wanted to show us the genie in her bottle. The culmination of Christina’s anti-establishment image came in the guise of one raucous music video, Dirrty. To this day, even though Kylie Jenner has tried to recreate it, nothing (yet) has managed to beat Christina wearing assless chaps in a boxing ring.
In the years since the Xtina’s MTV heydey music videos have become so sedate. Blurred Lines is a misogynistic yawn-fest in comparison. Long before Miley learnt to twerk Christina gave us a lesson in confidence and assless pants, she taught us that there is no shame in a slut drop and that dancing in a shower sprouting from the ceiling of the men’s toilets won’t lead to gonorrhoea. From Christina bare-knuckle cage fighting to rapper Redman hanging out with chickens, there’s a lot about Dirrty we’re still yet to digest.
