My Blogger Life: Margaret Zhang On Balancing Blogging With Law School

Margaret Zhang is one of the biggest names on the blogosphere, with the chicest Instagram around, so it's no surprise that Senso chose Margaret to take the images for their Autumn Winter 2015 campaign.

Senso's Imogen Meller said of the campaign: "Margaret has an amazing sense of style and a similar aesthetic to us- she really embodies the Senso girl so it was great to see her interpretation of this Collection. I’ve been following her work forever so trust her completely- it was fun to see the Collection come to life through a fresh pair of eyes." She added: "She’s been a customer and following us from the beginning so it was an easy match... We're on the same wavelength- she already knows & understands the brand and what we’re about!"

We caught up with Margaret to find our the secret to a killer Instagram picture, her style rules, how she balances blogging with law school and what her followers don't know about her...

Grazia Daily: What is the inside of your wardrobe really like?

Margaret: "I’ve been travelling so much recently that a lot of my wardrobe is living in my suitcase at the moment. I’m definitely a shoe (not bag) person, which takes up almost half of the space!"

**Grazia Daily: **How do you take such beautiful instagrams - do you take them on your phone? Use any editing apps?

Margaret: "Most of my Instagrams are taken on my phone, unless they’re lifted from campaigns/editorial that I’ve worked on, or content from Shine By Three. My favourite apps are Snapseed, Luminance and Lightroom."

Grazia Daily: What are the five things you think everything should own?

Margaret: "An oversized man blazer/coat, shredded boyfriend jeans, a good dark matte lipstick, leather trousers, and underwear that makes you feel like a boss."

**Grazia Daily: ** What is on the top of your shopping wish list?

Margaret: "I just sat on (and broke) my Wacom tablet, so need to get a new one of those. I’ve completely worn down the flat boots I’ve been living in for the past 6 months, so am eying off a few of the new season Senso textured leather ones. I’ve also been into bodysuits with high-waisted pants recently, and am super curious to see what the Adidas x Yeezy semi-sheer nude situations are like."

**Grazia Daily: ** What would you never blog about?

Margaret: "I don’t share too much of my personal life. It’s really important for me to have that separation and maintain some degree of privacy in a time when oversharing is so prevalent."

**Grazia Daily: ** What do you wear when you’re off duty that would never be on your Instagram/blog?

Margaret: "Honestly, I feel like my off-duty get-ups are pretty similar to what I’m wearing on my site. Nothing I post is terribly over the top or glamorous - it’s all quite an accurate reflection of what I’m like in person.

**Grazia Daily: ** What’s the one main thing you don’t think your followers know about you?

Margaret: "I’m a huge Romantic era/early 20th Century music dork - Granados and Gershwin make me cry."

Grazia Daily: You are at law school, do you want to pursue a career in fashion or law or both?

Margaret: "I think there’s definitely room for both. I might take a quick breather from the law side once I graduate, but I’m so fascinated by intellectual property issues in the digital and design spaces, which crosses over nicely into fashion."

Grazia Daily: What’s the best thing about having a world separate from blogging?

Margaret: "It definitely keeps me grounded. The fashion industry can be quite overwhelming and circular at times, so it’s nice to step away, regain some perspective, and use the other side of my brain before re-entering the creative space again."

**Grazia Daily: ** What has been your biggest pinch-me moment?

Margaret: "Being one of the global faces of Clinique has been quite surreal. So is working on campaigns and editorials with brands and publications that I’ve admired for a long time and really believe in such as Senso’s Autumn Winter 15 campaign. It was an amazing experience to work with the talented Senso team to create such beautiful imagery."

Grazia Daily: Have you had an embarrassing fashion moments you haven’t wanted to share?

Margaret: "I spent most of the first 16 years of my life in leotards, crossovers, jazz pants (almost as bad as jazz hands) and ‘nude’ tights 10 shades too light, so I suppose that’s a bit of a trip-up!"

**Grazia Daily: ** How much do you think about the Instagrams you post?

Margaret: "Not too much - I try to capture frames as I see them, and even then, I’ve been trying not to live my life through a lens. The only posts that take a bit longer are my #zhangflat flatlay set-ups, but I cap those at 15-20 minutes. If it’s not working, it’s not working."

**Grazia Daily: ** Who do you like to follow on Instagram?

Margaret: "Donald Robertson (@drawbertson), Vicki Lee (@vickileelee), Michael Zavros (@michaelzavros) are all exceptional (and very different) artists who are always posting visually exciting and directional content."
