Five Looks We Loved At the Marc Cain A/W’17 Show

Fashion month is yet to kick off in the four major cities, but in soon-to-be European style capitals like Copenhagen, Stockholm and Berlin, they get things started earlier (timing their proceedings neatly with the sub zero January temperatures...)

We headed to the German capital to catch the Marc Cain catwalk show, attended by the likes of actress-turned-fashion icon Kate Bosworth (soon to be seen in the upcoming BBC series SS-GB) and featuring the likes of Antonia Wesseloh and Kris Gottschalk (both rising German models who are turning heads on the international circuit; we're dubbing the latter Stuttgart's answer to fellow buzzcut beauty Ruth Bell). These are the autumn-winter looks that caught our eye...

1. Colour clash

What better way to banish winter blues in an instant than with a bold colour injection of not one but two eye-catching shades? On paper, the combination of bright orange (one of the colours of the season) and a warm pinky-red shouldn't work. In real life, it unquestionably does. Think of this as a work-appropriate take on Taylor Swift's Grammy outfit...

2. Double leopard print

If there's one motto we'll happily subscribe to, it's 'you can never have too much leopard print,' so the thought of double leopard (or is that triple? Note the subtly different spots on the handbag) makes us very happy indeed. While a printed velvet suit is certainly a bold choice, the simple, clean lines, pop of colour and classic tan accessories pull this look together.

3. Ballerina skirt + cosy knit

Call us nostalgic, but we've never got over the unabashed prettiness of a full tulle skirt. At the Marc Cain show (which was themed 'Ballet Magnifique' and opened with dancers pirouetting down the catwalk), we noted a new way to wear a tutu-inspired style without tiptoeing into dance class territory: layering with an oversized, cosy oatmeal knit. En pointe.

4. The cinched-in waist

We know what you're thinking - the last time you attempted a waist belt, it was made from that terrifying stretch material, a good two inches too wide, and came with Gok Wan's seal of approval. Fear not: this take is an altogether more classic affair, nodding to a 1940s silhouette, with a narrow belt cinched over tailoring or, in this case, a flying jacket.

5. Starry prints

For a feminine spin on athleisure staples like the bomber jacket and lounge-worthy trousers, simply swap sporty fabrics for gauzy layers and add intricate, dimensional star print. Don't mind us, we're just humming Ryan Gosling's refrain from La La Land...
