There’s just something so wonderfully ethereal and radiant about the Crawley ladies’ iconic beauty looks, and we think it’s pretty refreshing to see a look that is seriously stunning without the need for the ubiquitous feline flick, fake tan or red lip (as much as we love them). So, you can imagine how excited we were when we managed to catch up with Downton Abbey make-up artist Magi Vaughan who shared with us her secrets behind the gorgeous looks created for the hit TV show.

*THE SIX THINGS WE LEARNT ABOUT MAGI VAUGHAN, DOWNTON ABBEY MAKE-UP ARTIST:

1. She gets inspiration from museums and art galleries: “I love going to the V&A and the National Portrait Gallery although Google is also great!”

2. Soft colours are key to the Downton beauty look: “Everything in the 1920s was very round and very soft- pinks and browns are great for the eyes and I often put individual eyelashes just in middle of the eye to create a lovely roundness. The shape of the lips was also very round.”

3. She never uses powder: “Now, with HD camera technology there’s no escaping the truth! A powder makes everything too dead and flat, so I use a mattifying primer instead, which gives a much softer effect.” Try Laura Mercier’s Foundation Primer, £28.

4. It takes just over an hour to get each girl ready: “It depends on whether the episodes are downstairs or upstairs- upstairs takes much longer, but we’ve got it down to about an hour and a quarter now- hair, makeup, everything.

5. Lady Edith’s beauty look is her favourite: “She’s the most glamorous of the sisters. Her look is really iconic of the 1920s.”
