Pyjamas have officially made the leap from lazy Sunday attire to red carpet dressing, if Zendaya’s statement-making Teen Choice Awards outfit is anything to go by.

Thanks to brands like Olivia Von Halle and Yolke, silky pyjama separates are now firmly established amongst the most sophisticated of off-duty looks. In eschewing the heavily embellished, cut-out laden dresses and one-pieces worn by her peers in favour of a sequinned and striped menswear set from Ashish’s latest runway collection, Spiderman: Homecoming star Zendaya has made an appealing case for PJs as eveningwear. Dressed down yet put-together, the balance between luxe and laid-back appears effortlessly well-judged: look a little closer and you’ll note that the Working Girl-esque pinstripes are wrought from row upon row of tiny sequins.

This isn’t the first time that the actress has opted to wear an elevated pyjama style for a high-profile occasion. For Variety’s Young Hollywood party, which saw Zendaya honoured by the film industry bible alongside fellow up-and comers John Boyega and Chloe Grace Moretz, she chose sequinned separates again: this time, a more tailored style by Vivetta in a gradual fade from pink to red, sharpened up with millennial pink turn-ups.

With fellow millenial tastemakers Selena Gomez and Gigi and Bella Hadid all early adopters of the luxe pyjama set, it appears this is a trend with (wide) legs, albeit one that might prove, for us mere mortals, both winningly cosy and perilously soporific on the taxi or tube ride home...
