Meghan Markle Nails Heatwave Dressing At The Commonwealth Youth Forum

Meghan Markle schooled us in how to dress for an unexpected heatwave as she attended the Commonwealth Youth Forum, her first official Commonwealth event, with Prince Harry.

While previous official engagements have seen the Duchess-to-be fine tune a smart but modern approach to occasion dressing, often pairing a statement coat with wide-legged trousers and simple knitwear, the unusually high April temperatures ensured that Meghan tested out a new formula: a sleeveless shift dress paired with a smart blazer, heels and a now-trademark cross-body handbag.

The dress in question was the pinstriped ‘Audrey’ shift from Altuzarra, priced at £1,450 and still available (albeit in low stock) in a range of sizes at Net-a-porter. The jacket and bag, meanwhile, were both from Australian labels, perhaps in a diplomatic nod to the event: the former was by Camilla and Marc, the black and white bag by Orton (priced at £171, it still appears to be in stock on the brand’s website).

At the event, which was held at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in central London, the couple met with youth delegates from different countries in the Commonwealth.

Earlier this week, Prince Harry was announced as the new Commonwealth Youth ambassador, a role he will share with his future wife. ‘I am incredibly grateful that the woman I am about to marry, Meghan, will be joining me in this work, of which she too is hugely excited to take part in,’ he said in a speech on Monday.

It is certainly unusual, even unprecedented, that Meghan, as a royal fiancée, should take such a visible role in official engagements during CHOGM week, and is perhaps testament to how smoothly the former actress is adapting to royal life.

On Thursday evening, Meghan is set to join her fiancé at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting’s Women’s Empowerment reception, where she will meet with representatives from organisations that work to promote gender equality around the world through girls’ education.
