You’ve probably noticed the name Isabelle Huppert (pronounced ooo-pear, if you were wondering) buzzing around of late. Yes, the French actress has starred in 123 films (we’ve counted), but it was her Golden Globe winning, Oscar-nominated role in the most controversial film of the year, Elle, that has won her acclaim in 2017.
Another reason to love Miss Huppert? Her impeccable fashion sense. The 63-year-old French actress has fast become our new style stalk - with a closet packed full of dreamy tuxedos (more on that later), ‘70s-style flared jeans and the dreamiest red-carpet gowns we’ve ever seen. ‘It’s important how personal and singular you feel in what you wear,’ Huppert tells The New York Times. Her new Instagram account is a must-follow too, with 27k followers and growing, granting us behind-the-scenes access to her uber-glam life (and many an awards selfie with Nicole Kidman and co).
To celebrate the HRH of Parisian chic, we’ve picked the ageless style rules to steal from Isabelle Huppert…
Never underestimate the power of the pantsuit
The main appeal of French style? Less is always more. Case in point: Isabelle’s penchant for tailored blazers and super-chic trousers. The actress’ stylist, Jonathan Huguet (who also works with top French actresses Juliette Binoche and Charlotte Rampling) tells The Hollywood Reporter she favours boyish silhouettes. ‘What I like about Isabelle is that she's a fashionista - she knows the brands and designers,’ he said. ‘It's not unusual for her to have this boyish style because she’s really close to houses like Armani, and Armani loves to play with the masculine wardrobe on women.’
Go classic (with a twist)
When it comes to eveningwear envy, Isabelle’s effortless red carpet glamour is everything. At the Oscars this year she opted for a chic champagne gown by Armani Prive and avant garde jewellery by Repossi (ear cuffs are back, people!). Talking to Vogue US Huguet says, ‘when I’m dressing Isabelle for an awards show, I try to play both games—the French and American’ Adding:‘French women tend to not be as done up with the hair and makeup and over-the-top gowns like many American actresses. It’s less complicated, in a way.’
Chloé sunglasses are always a good idea
The French actress has long been a fan of the Chloé brand, so it made sense that fashion’s new darling was sat FROW-side this season in Paris, along with Clémence Poésy, Solange and Emma Roberts. Her ‘It’ accessory this fashion week? Statement shades, of course. Très chic!
LBD = Best Friend Forever
We’re a tad obsessed with this sheer, lace overlay black dress and dinner jacket combo at a pre-BAFTA party this year. Bonus style points for sparkly Chanel belt here too.
Keep your hairdo simple
‘Isabelle has that confidence and chic style of French women that is coveted by women worldwide,’ her hairstylist Marcus Francis tells THR. ‘She loves to keep her beauty look timeless and cool, and wearing it down gives Isabelle all three of those elements.’
