The red carpet is a stressful place, as Timothée Chalamet will be able to attest after a whistestop tour outside the BAFTAs that culminated in a now-memed woman falling at his feet.
The Call Me By Your Name star, who was nominated for best supporting actor at this year’s BAFTAs for his turn in Beautiful Boy and appears in abundant selfies taken with fans outside the Royal Albert Hall last night, paused to take some photos.
Wearing a shiny silver and red and blue-flecked Haider Ackermann blazer and collarless shirt with black trousers (a full head-to-toe look of this would be a bit a little too garish) and some butch boots, he did all the posing that the assorted paps were after. He gave smiles and those withering glances that make his jawline sharper than actual cutting tools and was was almost on his way when an onlooking woman fell on the stairs she was overseeing the red carpet from. Timothée gallantly went to help her up, as he was the nearest person to her, but a quick-thinking member of staff rushed to help both this unknown woman from the indignity of the ground, and Timothée from having to do anything but look pretty for the cameras.
The woman is currently unidentified and would perhaps like to remain that way - falling over in front of the international press and every single Timothée stan in the world isn’t the ideal way to be remembered at the UK’s biggest celebration of film. She also bore the brunt of having to prise Timothée from fans earlier on during the red carpet run. Clearly working with Timothée in some capacity, she only fell because she was walking backwards to give him enough space to get all his posing for the cameras done.
The question remains: is falling woman a long-time colleague of Timothée’s, in which case this incident will be a drop in an ocean of shared Timothée experiences, or is she a one-time red carpet assistant who did that on her first and only and last day of work for Timothée? For her sake, we really hope it's the former! And we hope she gets paid enough to do the rotten job of taking Timothée away from the fans, in order to get him into the ceremony on time.
Before the event, in a totally different outfit of a black T-shirt with a black blazer and a huge silver chain necklace, Timothée ate dinner at LouLou's in Mayfair with Andrew Garfield (no Rita Ora in sight, she was off at the Grammys) and Bohemian Rhapsody’s Rami Malek (who won best actor at the awards later) and Lucy Boynton.
After the ceremony, in which Mahershala Ali beat him in the best supporting actor category, for his turn in Green Book, Timothée made his way to a BAFTA afterparty, where other attendees included Naomi Campbell and Liam Payne, Taylor Swift and boyfriend Joe Alwyn, Claire Foy, Glenn Close, Viola Davis, Salma Hayek and Eddie Redmayne.
