If the Golden Globes is the A-list's chance to trial some more daring red carpet looks ahead of the Oscars, the SAG Awards is the night that Hollywood really lets its hair down. As the last major awards ceremony before the climax of the Academy Awards at the end of February, it's the last chance for stars to experiment with a little sartorial know-how. (Also, the awards are voted for by their peers, so there's a big 'inside party' vibe to the event, too).
This year's ceremony was no different, with some of our favourite actresses pulling out all of the stops on the red carpet. Case in point were perrenial Grazia favourites Emma Stone and Michelle Williams, who eschewed this year's penchant for nude (seriously, was there a dress code memo?) for more risqué looks by Alexander McQueen and Louis Vuitton respectively.
The Stranger Things' leading ladies Millie Bobby Brown and Natalia Dyer both chose red for the occasion, with the former wearing an age-appropriate custom-made gown by Giorgio Armani and the latter opting for a Miu Miu dress with beautiful floral appliqué details on the bust. Meanwhile also in attendance was fan favourite Shannon Purser - yes, that's Barb to me and you - who looked glamorous in a Fifties style off-the-shoulder dress with layered tulle skirt.
Not to be outdone by their televisual rivals, Game of Thrones' once-cut, now-grown-up, starlets Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams looked suitably gorgeous; Sophie stunning in a Jessica Rabbit inspired red dress with side split by Louis Vuitton and Maisie in a pink slinky night dress accessorised with a vampy black lip.
So without further ado, here are our top 5 looks of the night...
Emma Stone
La La Land star Emma opted for a black floral Alexander McQueen gown which featured a sheer lace body underneath, artfully exposed on one side (no 'free the nipple' warnings here). It was a decidedly sexier and more daring look from the actress, who we are more used to seeing in edgy-but-covered-up gowns or mannish tailoring. Bravo!
Michelle Williams
Clearly doing that mind trick where you 'visualise' what you want - aka winning an award by dressing a bit like one - Michelle slayed on the red carpet wearing a metallic sequinned column dress by Louis Vuitton - a designer she wears a lot. She accessorised the floor-length gown with a simple matching scarf - one of the biggest stylying trends of the season - as well as a smoky eye. She also gave us major #squadgoals by bringing bestie and former Dawson's Creek co-star Busy Phillips as her date. Ahh!
Emily Blunt
One star who we can forgive for adhering to the omnipresent nude dress rule at this year's SAG Awards is Emily Blunt, who looked incredible in Roberto Cavalli. The floral embroidery and crochet details on the illusion gown saved it from being 'just another nude dress', while her Lorraine Schwartz earrings perfectly complimented the hues in the look.
Millie Bobby Brown
The 12-year-old starlet can do no wrong in our eyes, largely due to her ability to look stylish but remain her age - she never dresses inappropriately, which is a difficult thing to do when designers are lining up to outfit you. She revealed that she had worked with Giorgio Armani to design this dress - a simple column style with high neck, ruched detailing at the waist and little lace sleeves - with the finishing touches being a rope belt and cute diamond Alice band. A+
Claire Foy
How different does Claire Foy look off-screen? The Crown actress - who plays our current Queen Elizabeth II in the hit Netflix drama - totally owned the red carpet in this elegant Valentino gown from the Pre Fall '17 collection featuring a sheer black overlay with floral details layered over a blush-coloured body with Peter Pan collar. A fashion-forward, sartorially-smart choice from the British star whose career is sure to go from strength-to-strength in 2017.
