Kanye West's Yeezy Season 3 show (which also doubled up as the launch for his latest album, 'The Life of Pablo') kicked off New York Fashion Week in true Kanye style. It was big, it was bold, it was a little bit weird. But as you'd expect from a show attended by reality television's first family, no one is really talking about the clothes. Here's your Yeezy cheat sheet...
Kim Kardashian wore a blonde wig
The party doesn't start 'til Kim walks in (she's much like Kesha, in that respect) so naturally, show-goers had to wait for the Kardashian-West-Jenner clan's arrival for proceedings to begin. Kim's latest Barbie blonde hair 'do is a serious departure from the long dark braids she wore just a couple of days ago.
Lamar Odom made his first appearance since last year
Lamar, who has not been seen in public since he was hospitalised last October, was accompanied to his seat by Kanye, and chatted to his ex Khloé throughout the show.
The Kardashian-Jenners took twinning to another level
Coordinating your outfit with just one best pal? So passé. The Kardashian-Jenner crew turned up in varying shades of white and blush pink, decked out in knits, furs and serious embellishment. Caitlyn and Kendall Jenner even opted for the same knitted tunic from Kanye's collection.
Kanye worked with Balmain to create his family's looks
Kanye teamed up with family friend Olivier Rousteing, the creative director of the legendary French fashion house, to create the ensembles worn by his squad. The designer even got a special shout-out at the end of the show, when Kanye asked 'Will the church please say 'Amen? Make some noise for Olivier!'
The whole thing was streamed on Tidal
You know, the Jay Z-backed music streaming service that no one really understands? According to Tidal, about 20 million people watched the show from around the world.
The models had to stick to some pretty weird rules
This is a Kanye show we're talking about, so it follows that there were some pretty off-beat, ahem, demands made of his model army. The full list - which includes 'no smile [sic]' 'no sexy posing' and 'do no look at the camera' - can be seen below. Kanye's most engimatic pronouncement? 'Do not ever look at the jumbotron.' It's probably best not to ask...
Naomi Campbell made an appearance
Naturally, the Streatham-born super broke all of the rules, and looked pretty fantastic doing so. Bow down. She was also joined by Veronica Webb and Alek Wek, who gave the model line-up some serious star power.
Kanye debuted some new music
Yeezy doesn't do things by halves, and his fashion presentation (held in the iconic Madison Square Gardens arena) also doubled up as the launch for his latest album, 'The Life of Pablo.' Yep, the album formerly known as 'Swish' and 'Waves' (keep up!) that Kanye's been mouthing off about on Twitter for the past few months.
He also referred to Taylor Swift in the most misogynistic way possible
In his new song ‘Famous’, Kanye alludes to that awkward Grammys incident (aka. the moment that the rapper officially became a walking meme), rapping: ‘I still feel like me and Taylor might have sex / I made that bitch famous.’ Seriously? It’s pretty sad that Kanye feels it’s appropriate to made derogatory, misogynistic and sexualised comments about Taylor. Yeezy, we’ve never been less impressed.
Taylor's brother became our new hero
Austen Swift is our new favourite celebrity sibling. As the Twitter-storm surrounding those lyrics started to gather pace, Taylor’s 23-year-old brother (who, incidentally, is just as photogenic as his older sister) responded with an Instagram video captioned ‘Getting a head start on some spring cleaning.’ In the clip, he symbolically chucks his Yeezy sneakers into a box of trash. Amen.
And Taylor’s squad weighed in, too
Taylor’s close pal Jaime King took to Twitter to send a message of sisterhood to the singer (who is godmother to her adorable son, Leo.)
While Taylor’s bestie Gigi Hadid was in attendance at the Yeezy show (along with sister Bella), she made it pretty clear that she didn’t support Kanye’s statement.
Taylor’s representative told Mashable: ‘Kanye ask[ed] Taylor to release his single ‘Famous’ on her Twitter account. She declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message.’
Kanye wants to be the next creative director at Hermes
Kanye rounded off his show in true Kanye style – by proclaiming that it was his lifelong dream to become the creative director of global fashion house Hermes. Dream big, Yeezy.
