It’s no secret that hosting The X Factor is the hottest TV job in the country but it doesn’t come without a downside - just ask Caroline Flack.

The 36-year-old has opened up about the hurtful abuse she has been sent on social media since taking on the job alongside fellow presenter Olly Murs in 2015.

“You can think social media is real life but you have to remember it’s not,” Caroline told the Daily Mirror.

“Someone wouldn’t come up to you in the street and say: ‘You’re a big, fat, ugly s***’, yet they find it really easy to say online.”

After she landed the most coveted job on TV, Caroline was ecstatic but her happiness soon turned sour when she saw the vile comments posted after the first episode in August.

“I cried after the first live Sunday night. The reaction was quite overwhelming because I didn’t think people would be talking about how I look, how I stand, how I walk, or how I laugh.”

Caroline is no stranger to the darker side of fame in the age of online trolls. The presenter was the target of ire from One Direction fans when she started dating Harry Styles in 2011.

“I’ve been in this industry for 12 years, and you get used to the criticism. I know how the game works.

“Not everyone is going to like you all the time, not everyone is going to think you’re beautiful, but there is a difference between opinion and abuse.”

The Strictly winner also pointed out the difference between your social media presence and real life, highlighting the pressure she feels to make everything look perfect:

“I can have the worst day ever but I’ll post the happiest picture of myself. My life is like a sad film.”

Caroline just spent a sun-soaked New Year in Miami. with bestie Lou Teasdale.
